Why Planning Equals Success for Your Marketing and Your Business

MARKETING PLANS ARE THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Planning allows you to build intentional marketing strategies and impactful marketing plans. It allows you to be clear on your vision and goals because you know

WHO you are trying to reach WHAT value you offer them HOW you will communicate that value WHEN you will reach out to them WHY they would engage with you HOW you will measure the success of your efforts (your KPIs)

We all have limited resources: time, effort, capacity, money, etc. The best thing you can do for yourself and your business is to know if you are spending those resources valuably. This knowledge comes in 2 parts.

  1. Planning is the first.

  2. Tracking your planned exceptions is the second.

From this duo, you then learn how to adapt and optimize your marketing plans to reach more people and how to provide more value.

So, don’t short-change yourself on the very first step of marketing!! It does not matter if you love to plan or hate to plan. Planning is an essential part of marketing, but it is only a part. And the whole picture is greater than the sum of its parts. So while I break down these ideas into separate posts, do not lose sight of the fact that marketing is a concert of efforts that all must work together to have an impact and sell your value. If you only build part of the puzzle, your work is not complete.

The process of producing GOOD marketing is not sexy. It is planning, detail management, number crunching, research, data collection, data analysis, pivoting quickly, and always listening to the customer. Creatives are in marketing, yes. And their roles are extremely valuable! However, there is significantly more to marketing than the creative side and the creative work cannot succeed and does not exist without the plan, the metrics, and the proof of returns.
